Please be advised that US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is introducing new rules around cargo descriptions for goods being shipped by air. The new rules are effective from noon EST on Wednesday 13th November.

The focus of the new rules is to remove general, vague or nondescript descriptions, replacing them with a more accurate description of the goods being shipped. For example, the description ‘Appliances’ will no longer be accepted. Instead, specific words are required, such as ‘Microwave Oven’ or ‘Coffee Machine’. A list of examples of the acceptable and unacceptable descriptions can be found by clicking here.

This is the latest change for imports into the US, with stricter rules introduced by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to secure the US borders.

More airlines are also now requesting Harmoizend System Codes (HS Codes) are added to the Air Waybill (AWB). This allows Customs officials to quickly and efficiently identify goods for clearing, ensuring the correct taxes are paid.
